Statistics Canada recently released several key economic reports covering pension fund performance, population trends, and inflation. Below is a summary for your reference.
Pension Funds
Canadian Pension Funds Post Strong Gains in 2025
Canadian employer pension plans returned 6.2% in 2025, with total market value rising by $151.9 billion to $2.6 trillion.
Population
Canada's Population Edges Down in Q1 2026
Canada's population fell by approximately 55,000 in Q1 2026 to an estimated 41.4 million, a decline of 0.1%. The drop was driven mainly by a decrease in non-permanent residents, alongside a 20% year-over-year decline in new permanent immigrants, in line with federal targets. National Bank Financial noted that a smaller population may help ease inflationary pressure, with housing costs likely to soften and an early shift to tighter monetary policy seen as unlikely.
Inflation
Inflation Rises to 3.2% in May, a 29-Month High
Canada's annual inflation rate climbed to 3.2% in May, above the forecast of 3.0% and up from 2.8% in April, marking a 29-month high. Gasoline prices surged 33.2% year-over-year, surpassing the previous peak seen during the early months of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Excluding gasoline, the CPI still rose to 2.2% from 2.0% in April, driven by higher costs for food, recreation, and alcoholic beverages. The monthly inflation rate hit 1.0%, the largest single-month increase in 15 months.
An interim peace deal between the United States and Iran signed last week has already begun to push oil prices lower, and analysts expect headline inflation to ease in June.
